What Is a Lithophane? A Beginner's Guide

A lithophane is a thin, translucent panel where the thickness of the material at every point encodes brightness. Thin areas let more light through and read as bright when backlit; thick areas block more light and read as dark. Lit from behind, the panel resolves into a recognisable photo — held up to normal daylight, it looks like a plain textured panel.

How 3D printing makes one

A source photo is converted into a height map: darker pixels become thicker material, lighter pixels become thinner material. A 3D printer then prints that height map layer by layer as a panel, usually a few millimetres thick at its thickest point.

We print lithophane panels in PLA at 0.16mm layer height. That layer height is fine enough to hold gradient detail — the smooth transitions between light and shadow that make a lithophane look like a photo rather than a posterised silhouette.

What makes a good lithophane photo

Photos with clear contrast between light and dark areas translate best — a face lit from one side, a pet against a plain background, a landscape with a defined horizon. Very flat, evenly-lit photos can come out lower contrast once printed, since there is less brightness range for the printer to work with.

Portraits, pet photos, wedding pictures, and memorial images are the most common requests, mounted into a lamp base, a book-style keepsake, or a standalone panel.
