Questions
Frequently asked questions
Everything customers usually ask before starting a custom order.
What is a lithophane?
A lithophane is a photo turned into a 3D printed panel with varying thickness. Thin areas let more light through and read as bright, thick areas block more light and read as dark, so the image only appears once it is lit from behind.
What material do you print in?
Pieces are printed in PLA at 0.16mm layer height, which keeps fine detail crisp on portrait lamps and gives lightboxes and jewelry a smooth, hand-finished surface.
How long does a custom order take?
Turnaround depends on the size and complexity of the piece. Send your idea through the contact form and we will confirm a timeline before anything is printed.
Do you do small batch or one-off orders?
Yes. Small batches and single custom pieces are both welcome — there are no factory minimums, so a one-off gift is treated the same as a small run for an event or business.
Can I collect my order or does it ship?
Both. Pieces made in the Leeds studio can be collected once ready, or packed and shipped to you.
How do I start a custom order?
Send a rough idea, reference photo, or logo through the contact form. We reply within 24 hours to refine size, material, colour, and finish before anything is made. Reference images can be sent after the first reply.
What can you make lithophane lamps from?
Family portraits, pet photos, wedding pictures, and memorial images are the most common. Any photo with clear contrast between light and dark areas works well.
Do you sell ready-made pieces, or is everything custom?
Both. Custom orders go through the contact form, and ready-made pieces are available in the Hugzy Designs shop.
